How to play Cup Pong

Learn the throw, the scoring and what changes in each format.

Aim and throw

Swipe towards the far rack and release to throw. Your swipe direction sets the aim; its length sets the power. Use the same gesture with a mouse or trackpad. A tap or a swipe backwards does not throw.

Choose Bounce before your throw to bounce off the table. The choice resets after the throw. In No bounce, use direct shots only.

Turns and scoring

Players alternate, with one throw per turn. A ball landing in a standing cup removes that cup. Rim contact can drop in, deflect into another cup or miss; only the cup the ball lands in counts.

A successful bounce removes the cup it lands in, then lets you choose one more standing cup. Tap that cup to remove it. If only one cup remains, there is no second cup to choose. A miss passes the turn.

Timed turns allow 20 seconds. When your clock runs out, the game makes a weak legal throw or chooses the second cup for you. Pass and play has no turn clock.

Automatic reracks

Classic starts with ten cups per side in a triangle. When a side reaches six cups, its remaining cups form a smaller triangle. They rearrange again at three. Six cups starts at six and reracks at three. You do not need to request a rerack.

Redemption and winning

Clear the opposing rack to put your side ahead. With redemption enabled, the opposing side gets one final throw. Missing ends the match. Sinking any standing cup saves them, even if more cups remain in the other rack.

A successful redemption resets both racks to three cups for sudden death. The first side to clear the opposing rack wins, with no further redemption. In No redemption, clearing the last cup ends the match immediately.

Game formats

Choose the format when you start your game. The available choices depend on how you play.

Classic2 players
Ten cups per side. Bounce shots and one redemption throw are enabled. Rerack at six and three.
Six cups2 players
Start with six cups per side for a shorter match. Rerack at three; bounce and redemption remain enabled.
No redemption2 players
Ten cups per side. Clear the last cup to win immediately. Bounce shots and automatic reracks remain enabled.
No bounce2 players
Ten cups per side with direct throws only. Automatic reracks and the redemption throw remain enabled.
Team 2v24 players
Two teams share one rack each. Sides alternate turns, and teammates alternate throws within their side. Use Classic scoring, bounce, reracks and redemption.
Survival3 to 8 players
Everyone shoots at one shared rack and starts with three lives. A miss costs one life. Losing all three eliminates you; turns skip eliminated players. Clearing a rack replaces it with six, then three, then one cup. Further clears keep a one-cup rack. The last player with lives wins. Bounce shots can still remove a second cup; there is no redemption.
